Technique
Here are a few of the techniques I am exploring.
DOUBLEWEAVE
I have been drawn to doubleweave since I began weaving. Doubleweave involves weaving at least two layers of cloth, one on top of each other, at the same time on the loom. The layers may be separate and usually, the layers are exchanged, sometimes leaving the casual observer wondering where that splash of color came from.
Shibori
Shibori is the Japanese art of stitch-resist dyeing. Stitches or knots are tied into the fabric and pulled tight before dyeing. The area of the stitches resist the dye and a wide variety of intricate patterns emerge when the stitches are removed. When I steam the silk scarves before the stitches are removed, the scarves retain dramatic textures.

Ply-Split Braiding
Ply-Split Braiding is an ancient craft used in India to create camel girths and other animal regalia. It has become a contemporary art form, using 4-ply cords. I wind my own 4-ply cords from tencel, cotton, and other yarns. A special tool (gripfid) is used to split one or more cords and pull another through.

Ikat
Ikat is the technique of resist-dyeing patterns into threads before dyeing. I am especially intrigued by weft ikat but have been experimenting with warp ikat and double ikat (both warp and weft are bound before dyeing & weaving). It is time-intensive, to say the least.
